Solar firm plans $500m CQ hydrogen project

International solar firm Eco Energy World has announced plans for a $500 million green hydrogen and solar PV development in Raglan near Gladstone. EEW was already planning a 300MW solar farm at Raglan and now aims to combine the PV plant with a project to produce renewable energy for green hydrogen production, developing a 200MW hydrogen plant with a further 100MW allocated to energy storage. The proposed hydrogen plant would produce 33,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year using electrolyser technology, the company said. “The State of Queensland in Australia is well-positioned strategically to act as a major player in the future generation and export of hydrogen," chairman Svante Kumlin said. "This is due to its existing gas pipeline infrastructure, access to a deep-water export port at Gladstone and significantsolar resources that make it an extremely attractive location for this emerging industry. “Having studied the evolving hydrogen industry since 2017, it now makes sense for us to enter this exciting market as we see the ongoing growth in large-scale electrolyser production and that consequently, capex costs are rapidly falling. "This significant project marks a key milestone in our own corporate development as we work in parallel to seek a public listing for the group on an international stock exchange during the course of 2021." EEW has entered into a partnership with an internationally recognised hydrogen electrolyser manufacturer as a technology partner. It said project construction would start as early as Q3 2022 and create up to 100 jobs. Gladstone has attracted a raft of hydrogen proposals, including Sumitomo and JGC Holdings's plans for a plant to produce 250-300 tonnes of hydrogen annually, with plans to scale up production. They have signed a Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract for a hydrogen project. Pure Hydrogen Corporation and Liberty Hydrogen have revealed plans for hydrogen manufacturing and distribution hubs at Gladstone and Mackay under a new joint venture company. Stanwell Corporation has announced a partnership with Japan’s largest hydrogen supplier, Iwatani Corporation, to progress a proposed renewable hydrogen export facility in Gladstone. Austrom Hydrogen has secured land in the Callide region for a proposed solar farm and battery facility to power a hydrogen production facility in the Gladstone area for export, and Australian Gas Networks (part of the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group) plans to produce renewable hydrogen to be blended with natural gas for supply to customers on Gladstone’s gas network. The Hydrogen Utility (H2U) proposes a large-scale chemical complex for production of renewable hydrogen and ammonia. The proposed development would be constructed in stages to integrate up to 3GW in electrolyser plant (supplied solely by renewable electricity) and up to 5000 tonnes per day in ammonia production capacity.sing water and electricity from the grid.
