Minjar Gold brings mental health to the fore

Colourful shirts and a range of activities saw the team at Minjar Gold’s Pajingo Mine turn the conversation to the important topic of mental health recently.

Employees and contractors at the Charters Towers district gold mine held a series of BBQs and talks during Mental Health Week to raise awareness of this issue.

The initiative also saw the purchase of 170 shirts from TradeMutt with the simple message “This is a Conversation Starter” (TIACS), with 5 per cent of purchases being donated to the TIACS foundation. (More HERE)

“It is appropriate that in these challenging times we communicate with the workforce and provide assistance and support to each other,” HSEC manager Tony Shearman said.

Mr Shearman said that historically the image of ‘big brave miners’ had prevented the mental health issue gaining its full momentum, but a change had been noticeable in recent years and people and companies were more proactive in their approach.

He said Minjar Gold partnered with an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider to help employees and family, with many additional support groups communicated across its employees and contractors as well.
