Major repairs for new Coopers Gap wind farm

Australia’s largest wind farm, the $850 million Coopers Gap project in Queensland, is to undergo major repairs after faults were found during commissioning.

Project operator AGL said in a statement today that one of the 123 wind turbines would have to be replaced as well as a number of generators.

GE CATCON was appointed by Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF) to construct the wind farm, which saw its final turbine installed in April.

“During the commissioning process, rigorous tests were carried out to ensure the long-term operational capability and reliability of each component,” the AGL spokeswoman said.

“However, recent testing by GE has identified that one of their wind turbines will need to be replaced. An exclusion zone has been erected around the turbine to ensure safety.

“GE will also replace a number of generators to ensure long-term, reliable operations.”

A GE spokesman said the relevant turbine had been taken out of service while the Coopers Gap project continues to remain operational.

“GE takes reliability of our equipment seriously and is taking a proactive approach to change out generators, a component inside the nacelle, in 50 of the turbines,” he said.

“We have already commenced planning for a repair program conducted in phases to minimise disruption.”

The final blade on the 123rd wind turbine at Coopers Gap was hoisted into place by crane and fitted to the turbine hub in late April.
