Green light for Kogan Creek hydrogen plant

A demonstration facility next to the Kogan Creek coal-fired power station near Chinchilla is set to start producing renewable hydrogen within two years. Publicly-owned generator CS Energy has drawn strong interest from potential domestic off-takers after a successful feasibility study with Japanese industrial giant IHI Corporation Japan. The plant will include the co-location of a solar farm, battery, hydrogen electrolyser and hydrogen fuel cell. It will produce 50,000kg of renewable hydrogen each year. State Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said the Kogan Creek project was an opportunity for publicly owned CS Energy to stake its territory in the hydrogen sector and expand Queenslanders’ ownership of renewable energy assets. Heavy transport sector targeted with zero-emission fuel “Better yet, CS Energy are looking to support the decarbonisation of the heavy transport and haulage market with their locally produced zero emission fuel and discussions are well advanced with multiple potential off-takers," he said. “Transport is Australia’s second largest emitter after the electricity sector so making renewable hydrogen available offers enormous potential for transport sector innovation in Queensland.” Related: Boost for Stanwell hydrogen export plans Mr de Brenni said the project was unique because the hydrogen produced would use “behind the meter” renewable energy rather than power from the grid, in a demonstration that traditional sectors could innovate and expand their market offering. At the same time, Mr de Brenni announced that CleanCo had signed an agreement to join Sumitomo Corporation and its partners on the development of a hydrogen industry in Gladstone. Consortium partners include Gladstone Ports Corporation, Gladstone Regional Council, CQUniversity Australia and Australian Gas Infrastructure Group. Andrew Bills, CS Energy.
