Autonomous switch brings boost for CQ businesses

Central Queensland businesses have won more than $4.2 million in contracts as BMA Goonyella Riverside mine gears up for the start of autonomous haulage operations in September. The Bowen Basin site is pioneering the coal company's shift to the technology, and is expected to spend about $8.2 million in total with regional businesses as it works to bring it online. “The rollout of autonomous haulage at Goonyella has been great for businesses in Central Queensland," Goonyella Riverside general manager Sean Milfull said. "These local businesses have upskilled their staff, and in some cases have employed several new staff to support the works being completed at the mine ahead of the first trucks being operational from September this year. "Autonomous haulage will help us further improve safety and productivity on site, and we are creating new roles and opportunities for the people of Central Queensland.” Moranbah-based CPH Mining & Civil has constructed the new ramp 25 calibration pad and access road in preparation for the change. This is where the new Komatsu autonomous haulage trucks will have their autonomy functionality tested before entering the pit to be commissioned. Mackay-based NB Industries is completing the fit out of ancillary equipment to enable it to be visible and communicate via the autonomous system. It is the type of work that would usually be the domain of OEMs and requires a mixtures of autoelectrical, communications and boilermaker trades. “NB Industries is excited to be a part of the BHP Goonyella Riverside autonomous haulage project as it has afforded us the opportunity to employ more local talent, upskill and enhance the experience of our existing workforce and foster multiskilled tradespeople" business development manager Simon Plant said. "Due to the shortage of skilled tradespeople in our sector, we are passionate about investing in training and mentoring to grow the resourcefulness and relevance of our team and community into the future." The Queensland-owned business has employed three new full-time tradesmen to support the work in addition to their existing roster of eight full-time tradesmen. The introduction of autonomous haulage at Goonyella Riverside will involve the staged conversion to an autonomous fleet of up to 86 Komatsu trucks by the end of next year. BMA has confirmed that its Daunia site 30km south-east of Moranbah is under consideration for the introduction of autonomous haulage as well, but no decision has been made.
